When you have natural hair, you are probably very meticulous about how you care for it.
You may think you have the best hair routine in place and are using the best products, but could you be damaging your delicate hair every day and not even know it. Continue reading to see if you are doing any of these things when caring for your hair and see how you can change it up a bit, if needed.
Drying hair with any old towel.
The type of towel you use when drying your hair after showering can make a huge difference on breakage and damage to your hair. You may be tempted to use any old towel but reach for a microfiber towel instead. Microfiber will be less harsh on your hair, especially when compared to cotton or terry cloth towels which can lead to dry, brittle hair with split ends.
Messing with your hair too much.
Do you find yourself running your fingers through your hair, not using the right comb, or over-styling your hair? Manipulating your hair in these ways are huge no-no’s! If you aren’t using the right comb or brush, you will end up with split ends, breakage, and thinning hair. Try using a wide tooth comb and a boar bristle brush for styling. These are much gentler on the hair and will cause less damage.
Using cheap products.
Now by cheap, we don’t necessarily mean in price, we mean in quality. Look for products that are designed for your type and texture of hair. Be sure to use products that are paraben and sulfate-free. You will end up using triple the amount of cheap products with cheap ingredients when compared to the amount you would when using quality products. Improper use of hair dryers.
It may seem like there is only one way to use a hair dryer but that’s not the case. Make sure you are always attaching the diffuser so that the airflow is more evenly dispersed and your hair is not subjected to direct high heat.
Be sure to avoid some of the common pitfalls that we mentioned above and your hair will be all that much healthier because of it! Looking for more great tips? Be sure to “like” our Facebook page and stay in the know!
